What We Are
Founded in 1963 with the original goal of helping people plan simple, dignified funerals or memorials at fair prices, FCSC has greatly expanded its mission to include:
Helping people make informed funeral planning decisions
Education on significant end-of-life issues
Updates of pertinent state and federal laws
FCSC is open to all, regardless of age or ethnic background, and is nonsectarian. We are an affiliate member of nonprofit Funeral Consumers Alliance, a leading national organization advocating consumer rights. FCA delivers educational materials and advice to more than 100 volunteer-run consumer information groups around the country.
What We Are Not
We are not a charity nor a funeral home, nor a funeral insurance plan, nor prepayment plan. We are not affiliated with any mortuary. We do not make decisions for consumers. We are not a repository for end-of-life documents. We are not antagonistic to the funeral industry.
Our Roots
In 1963, the Rocky Mountain Memorial Society was registered as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Colorado. The group represented a democratic association of people from all walks of life who wanted simple, dignified alternatives to the elaborate and increasingly costly funeral services promoted by the funeral industry. To more accurately reflect our current mission of helping consumers stay informed about funeral industry practices and economical alternatives to expensive funerals, our group changed its name to the Funeral Consumer Society of Colorado in 1998.
Outreach
FCSC typically holds six meetings throughout the year with our annual board meeting in May, which generally includes one or two industry speakers. If you are interested in attending, please call 720.432.5379.
In addition, our board volunteers set up booths and answer questions at Front Range events designed for seniors, such as senior law days and senior resource fairs. These outreach opportunities were suspended in 2020, but we hope to resume in-person events soon.
Since 2021, FCSC has introduced an educational webinar series, with the first installment Six Feet Under? Or... available for viewing online. Find out about our upcoming webinars.
